On Wednesday, May 16 at 7:00PM Eastern Time, the Central Florida Computer Society Digital Photo SIG will hold its monthly virtual meeting. This meeting is also an APCUG benefit and is open to its members groups and their members. Also the general public is invited to attend to see what Computer User Group Special Interest Groups (SIG) are all about.

and check the box next to “CFCS Digital Photo SIG” and click the Register button. You will receive your log-in via email. There will also be a link to a test to be sure that you will be able to attend. A small download will be required.

This month’s meeting consists of two parts and this meeting will be aimed at beginners and intermediate users. Part 1 will be “RTFM: A Guide to reading your Point & Shoot Camera User Guide”. Part 2 will be “How to Buy a Digital Camera,“ a short explanation of the 4 types of cameras and how to purchase the best type for you. This topic is based on a recent PC Mag article.

(www.cfcs.org) invites you and your UG members toattend their Virtual Digital Photo SIG meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 16,at 7:00pm, Eastern time.

Hewie Poplock, CFCS Digital Photo SIG leader, will be covering several photography and photo editing tips and tricks, aimed at beginners and intermediate photographers.

If your user group doesn’t have a Digital Photo SIG, this is an opportunity for your members to participate in an online DP SIG. If your group has a Digital Photo SIG, it’s an added opportunity for those members to enhance their skills.

"Hunderds of thousands may lose Internet in July". The FBI will turn off their "safety net". It talks about checking your computer by going to http://www.dcwg.org and having that software check your computer for infection.

I don't know if it will be that many.. but still it is worth a couple of clicks just to be sure that your computer is okay.

Tips to Save Time in Microsoft Outlook From HP

Organization and shortcuts are the key to efficiency when it comes to e-mailing clients, customers and co-workers.

Responding in a timely manner is crucial to business, so keep these Microsoft® Office Outlook® tips at your disposal to stay current and organized.

1. Keep a tidy inbox

The most important thing to maintain is also sometimes the most difficult: a clean inbox. Don’t be afraid to delete! Having a spring cleaning session once every few months is good for the soulundefinedIt gets rid of clutter. Deleted items can be permanently removed from your account by clicking Empty. Just be sure there’s nothing you will need in the future. You can also archive old items with the Auto Archive option. Having organized topic folders is helpful, as long as there aren’t so many subdivisions that it gets confusing. You can also store mail in the vault, which will automatically archive messages.

2. Never see “Your mailbox is almost full” again

Folders are a great way to maintain organization; however, unless folders are stored on your hard drive, they will still clog your inbox. Storing these on your hard drive will reduce the messages you have in your inbox, therefore making sure there is enough space, and avoiding the dreaded “Your mailbox is almost full” pop-up.

On the File menu, highlight New, and click Outlook Data File.
Select Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst), and click OK.
In the File name box, type a name for the file, then click OK.
In the Name box, type a display name for the .pst folder.

You can add a password of up to 15 characters.

Use strong passwords that combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Weak passwords don't mix these elements. Strong password: Y6dh!et5. Weak password: House27. Passwords should be 8 or more characters in length. A pass phrase that uses 14 or more characters is better. For more information, see Help protect your personal information with strong passwords.

It is critical that you remember your password. If you forget your password, Microsoft cannot retrieve it. Store the passwords that you write down in a secure place away from the information that they help protect.

If you select the Save this password in your password list check box, make a note of the password in case you need to open the .pst file on another computer. Select this check box only if your Microsoft Windows user account is password-protected and no one else has access to your computer account.

Important Neither Microsoft, your Internet service provider (ISP), nor your mail administrator has access to your password. No one can open or recover the contents of the .pst file if you forget the password.

The name of the folder that is associated with the data file appears in the Folder List. To view the Folder List, on the Go menu, click Folder List. By default, the folder will be called Personal Folders.

You can also click on “Store in Vault” to select which items you would like to keep in cyberspace- in case you ever need them again.

3. Create a new message shortcut

For those of you who email frequently, setting up pre-addressed email templates and storing them in a shortcut folder on your desktop will cut out a lot of excess typing (and undoubtedly lower your risk of Carpal Tunnel). To create this shortcut, right click on your desktop:

Select New
Select Shortcut
In ‘Location of Item’ type ‘mailto:’ followed by the recipient’s email address (all with no spaces)
After clicking ‘Next,’ you will be able to name your new shortcut folder

Once you are finished, you will have a pre-addressed email ready to go, every time you click the icon.

4. Out of Office replies are key

Out of Office replies will keep your colleagues and contacts from spending precious time wondering if and why you are avoiding them. While you still have the ability to check your email remotely, having Out of Office enabled will allow others to know that you may not receive their email until you return. It’s a good idea to include emergency contact information so those who need to get in touch with someone can do so easily. As long as your server runs on Microsoft Exchange, setting up Out of Office is simple:

Select Tools
Select Out of Office Assistant
Check Send Out of Office Replies, select date range, and type message
Click OK

5. Spell checking is the cardinal rule of anything ever written

It is a tool that makes us wonder how we ever got along without it. There are simple ways to check and correct spelling in any e-mail. If you right click on a misspelled word, other spelling options for that word will appear, allowing you to choose one. To spell check an entire email, simply press F7 on your keyboard and you will be able to check the entire document for both spelling and grammar.

6. Know keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are convenient to quickly check, send, and save emails. Some of the most commonly used shortcuts (+ means ‘in combination with’; not the + ‘addition’ key) are:

CTRL + R Reply
CTRL + F Forward
CTRL + N New Message
CTRL + P Print
CTRL + C Copy
CTRL + V Paste
CTRL + X Cut
ALT + S Send

F7 Spell Check
F9 Check for Mail

January 2012 Meeting Notes

Thanks to those that braved the cold weather and came out to the meeting. We kicked off our Back to the Basics series this month. This is a series of several short presentations about things that you do every day with your computer. They will hopefully give you some insight as to why things happen and how you can work more easily with your computer and software.

2012 Security Suites are Out Repost of By Neil J. Rubenking article

More than half of the major security vendors have released their 2012 security suites already, counting both those with "2012" in the name and those released since the first 2012 edition appeared. Their prices range from under $40 to almost $90, but the most expensive aren't necessarily the most effective. Even though quite a few haven't been updated yet, a couple of clear winners have emerged.

Norton Internet Security 2012 ($69.99 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) excels in all areas, with no component rating less than four stars. Even in areas like spam filtering and parental control, weak points for many suites, Norton does a great job. And its smart firewall protects against a wide variety of attacks.

Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars) is this season's breakout success. Totally rewritten, its core components occupy less than 600KB of disk space. In my testing, Webroot achieved a first-ever perfect score for malware blocking. And its online backup and file synchronization goes way beyond almost all of the competition. Webroot and Norton currently share the Editors' Choice honor for security suites.

The chart below lists the 2012 suites along with the star ratings for their various components.

How to recognize phishing email messages, links, or phone calls

Phishing email messages, websites, and phone calls are designed to steal money. Cybercriminals can do this by installing malicious software on your computer or stealing personal information off of your computer.

Cybercriminals also use social engineering to convince you to install malicious software or hand over your personal information under false pretenses. They might email you, call you on the phone, or convince you to download something off of a website.

What does a phishing email message look like?

Here is an example of what a phishing scam in an email message might look like.

Spelling and bad grammar. Cybercriminals are not known for their grammar and spelling. Professional companies or organizations usually have a staff of copy editors that will not allow a mass email like this to go out to its users. If you notice mistakes in an email, it might be a scam. For more information, see Email and web scams: How to help protect yourself.
Beware of links in email. If you see a link in a suspicious email message, don't click on it. Rest your mouse (but don't click) on the link to see if the address matches the link that was typed in the message. In the example below the link reveals the real web address, as shown in the box with the yellow background. The string of cryptic numbers looks nothing like the company's web address.

Links might also lead you to .exe files. These kinds of file are known to spread malicious software.
Threats. Have you ever received a threat that your Hotmail account would be closed if you didn't respond to an email message? The email message shown above is an example of the same trick. Cybercriminals often use threats that your security has been compromised. For more information, see Watch out for fake alerts.
Spoofing popular websites or companies. Scam artists use graphics in email that appear to be connected to legitimate websites but actually take you to phony scam sites or legitimate-looking pop-up windows. For more information, see Avoid scams that use the Microsoft name fraudulently.

Cybercriminals also use web addresses that resemble the names of well-known companies but are slightly altered. For more information, see Protect yourself from cybersquatting and fake web addresses.

Beware of phishing phone calls

Cybercriminals might call you on the phone and offer to help solve your computer problems or sell you a software license. Neither Microsoft nor our partners make unsolicited phone calls (also known as cold calls) to charge you for computer security or software fixes.

Once they've gained your trust, cybercriminals might ask for your user name and password or ask you to go to a website to install software that will let them access your computer to fix it. Once you do this, your computer and your personal information is vulnerable.

Treat all unsolicited phone calls with skepticism. Do not provide any personal information.

Report phishing scams

If you receive a fake phone call, take down the caller's information and report it to your local authorities.

You can use Microsoft tools to report a suspected scam on the web or in email.

Internet Explorer. While you are on a suspicious site, click the gear icon and then point to Safety. Then click Report Unsafe Website and use the web page that is displayed to report the website.
Hotmail. If you receive a suspicious email message that asks for personal information, click the check box next to the message in your Hotmail inbox. Click Mark as and then point to Phishing scam.
Microsoft Office Outlook. Attach the suspicious email message to a new email message and forward it to reportphishing@antiphishing.org. To learn how to attach an email message to an email message, see Attach a file or other item to an email message.

We got off to a little bit of a rocky start, the Church had our date down wrong.. so we meet in the Choir Room.. I kind of liked it.. let me know what you though. you can email me at robbie@hostaroo.com
At the check in table we missed David Kling, Rosemary Viele gave an update that he had fallen and broke a Hip and is working on recovering.

We started off Ed offering to read user to user.. no takers.

SIG Presentation was Susan Moore talking about the Excel SIG which meets at the 1st Monday of each month.

Our main presenters where Scott Render and Susie Unseld with the City of Louisville, they talked about the City of Louisville website and the other sites that they are responsble for and how getting people to update them and more importantly.. how everyday people come to the site to use it and find answers. Very informative.

Attendance Prize was $60.00 and went unclaimed

the PIG SIG was held at Red Robin, since our old friend TGIF closed

Our next meetings will be April 5th Tom Scanlon will talk about Click Free back up. This is from the CES show that he attended in January.

Greetings just wanted to recap our great January meeting.
